Good Book 1 call
Folks,
I enjoyed tonight’s call on Herodotus Book 1. Special thanks to Shawn, Laurel and Oliver for kicking off our discussion on each of the three main questions!
Our next call is one month away – Monday, March 5 – we’ll send out reminders well in advance (same call-in information as always). Andre will also send out the three questions to cover both Books 2 and 3 for that call.

Thank you for reading Herodotus with us in this “dry run”! You are such an interesting, diverse group. It’s a thrill to be doing this with you.
Below are the questions we’d like you to keep in mind as you read Book 1.

Question 1 Herodotus famously says on page 5 that he will talk about not just great cities but small – How do Croesus and Cyrus serve as examples for this important part of Herodotus’ philosophy?
Question 2 Oracles play a key role in the first half of Book 1. Be prepared to talk about the Oracles – what was prophesied, the impact the oracles had and the role of fate in ancient Greece/Herodotus. Also think about “asking for help” – it comes up throughout Herodotus.
Question 3 Book 1 is full of stories – some of these may be familair to you because many writers have read Herodotus and been influenced by or borrowed from him. What are some of your favorite stories from this first book?

Hedy Williamson (RO2)
I was born and live in Laguna Beach California.
I received a BFA from UC Santa Cruz with a specialization in printmaking . I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica where I taught art and worked with young craft workers. After Peace Corps I remained in Jamaica and taught at the national art school for a few years before receiving my MFA in design from The George Washington University. I teach occasional courses at a local community college, but mostly manage to live by selling my artwork and living frugally. Five years ago I remarried and my husband Bob and I love to travel and garden. Neither of us have children. We spend part of each year on Quadra Island in British Columbia.
Shawn Budde (RO2)
As the Vice President of Enterprise Customer Management, Shawn Budde isresponsible for creating a strong and enduring customer culture withinthe organization and for building the infrastructure to support aconsistent customer experience across Capital One. Headquartered inMcLean, Virginia, Capital One Financial Corporation is a leader in thedirect marketing of credit cards and other financial services and isone of the largest providers of MasterCard and Visa credit cards in theworld.
Over the past few years, Mr. Budde’s diverse responsibilities haveincluded leadership of several of Capital One’s business units. Thosehave included the Customer Acquisition Center, which supports thesolicitation and booking of new accounts across the company; theProduct Innovation Center, which provides operational support forproduct development; and the Customer Management Center, which executesmarketing programs to existing customers, identifies products forCross-Selling and serves as an interface between operations and theU.S. Card lines of business. Mr. Budde joined Capital One in 1999 andspent his first four years with the company working in the UnderservedMarkets business – first as the head of account management and later asthe head of the business.
Mr. Budde’s managerial experience and industry expertise comes fromnearly 20 years in the consumer finance industry with a variety oflenders including a finance company, a super-regional bank and as anindependent consultant. Prior to joining Capital One, Mr. Budde servedas the Vice-President of Platinum Card Acquisitions for Citicorp’s U.S.credit card business.
Mr. Budde earned a B.A. from Columbia University in New York City andan M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Member Bruce Upbin’s article on Bob Strassler
Folks,
Bruce Upbin, senior editor at Forbes and longtime member of our reading group, just wrote and published an article on Bob Strassler – our favorite classicist and editor of one of the best editions of any of the classics I’ve ever seen.
Bob Strassler came down to NY last summer and spend the better part of the day and evening with us at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
